Market Recap and Commentary
S&P 500 Total Return Index gained 12.82% in the month of April. A record performance for April in any year.
Since the lows in the stock market on March 23, 2020, the balance sheet of the Federal Reserve has grown by just under $2 trillion to $6.656 trillion. Source; Bloomberg. All that “cash” must find someplace to go, and Wall Street seems to be the beneficiary. The Federal Reserve Bank has essentially become the buyer of last resorts and the equity markets are feasting.
It seems like an everyday conversation in our shop that the markets rise is disconnected from reported facts. We have over 30 million people filed for new unemployment claims in a month (essentially wiping out over 10 years of job growth). The 1st quarter GDP was negative -4.8% (and expected to be revised significantly lower), signaling the start of a recession. A recession is declared in reverse after two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth. Given the economic statistics that are coming out, the estimates of GDP decline in the 2nd quarter ranges from -10% to -30% and so it appears that an official recession in the U.S. will be reported after the end of June. William Powell, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board at the briefing following the April Federal Reserve Board meeting said:
“We’re going to see economic data for the second quarter that’s worse than any data we’ve ever seen.”
Given that backdrop, our expectation remains that the S&P 500 Index will retest its March 2020 lows and that the runup over the past 6 weeks is a “bear market rally.” We have been trading accordingly, reluctant to “load the boat” with short option positions in the environment of rising equity prices and falling VIX.
As the market has climbed over 32% since the March 2020 lows, we see more conversations about a V-shaped recovery and return to normal. The current position of the market reminds us of the “return to normal” trap in John Paul Rodrigue’s familiar chart of speculative bubbles.
Performance and Trading Update
Horse Cove Partners Absolute Return Strategy composite was up 0.82% net of fees.
As we mentioned in our last newsletter, the rally off the lows at this point feels like a bear market trap and there is much evidence to support that. We do not wish to be the one holding the potato when the music stops and are trading as such. A near-total unexpected shut down of the world economy for over two months is not something that will be erased quickly. As such we have been trading lightly, and cautiously. Our focus is to avoid losses in a major move one way or the other and have significant liquidity to take advantage of fear premium once it does.

Reg. T Update
Here are the composite net returns for the Reg. T accounts for the periods indicated:
IRA accounts must use Reg. T Margin which means that fewer option contracts may be written than in the “regular” accounts that use Portfolio Margin. Over time, this may also result in lower returns when compared to the “regular” accounts.

“We do not believe we are smarter than the market, nor can we time the market in any given week or month. As a result, we take an investment approach similar to an insurance company in that our investment strategy focuses on the probability of success and the management of risk. We believe that it is possible to realize positive returns through a disciplined focus on the risk of each trade with a weekly investment horizon, and accepting intelligent losses when risk events occur.”
We thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,

The strategies reflect the deduction of advisory fees and any other expenses that a client would have paid or actually paid. The S&P 500 Index is used for comparative purposes only. The volatility of an index is materially different from that of the model portfolio. The S&P 500 refers to the Standard and Poor's 500 Index which is a capitalization-weighted index of 500 stocks. The index is designed to measure the performance of the broad domestic stock market. The VIX (CBOE volatility index) is the ticker symbol for the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) Volatility Index, which shows the market's expectation of 30-day volatility. It is constructed using the implied volatilities of a wide range of S&P 500 index options. This volatility is meant to be forward-looking and is calculated from both calls and puts. The VIX is a widely used measure of market risk and is often referred to as the "investor fear gauge." Investors cannot invest directly in an index. An index does not charge management fees or brokerage expenses, and no such fees or expenses were deducted from the performance shown. Options trading entails a high level of risk. The models do not include the reinvestment of dividends and capital gains because options don't pay dividends.
